The "Nominal Ratio" — Why the Real Volume Differs
The ratio 1 BF = 1/12 ft³ is the nominal geometric ratio. It assumes a perfectly rectangular board with exactly the stated dimensions.
In practice, sawn lumber is rarely exactly nominal size. Reasons the actual volume may differ:
- Surfaced lumber (S2S, S4S) has material removed. A nominal 2×4 is actually 1.5" × 3.5".
- Rough hardwood is sold at nominal thickness but widths and lengths vary.
- Log-to-lumber conversion typically yields 40–60% of the log's cubic volume in sawn board feet, depending on the log rule and sawing method.
- Export/import trades often use actual measured cubic meters (m³), not nominal board feet. Use this converter for the mathematical conversion; always verify with your supplier.

10 × 423.8 = 4,238 BF
Kiln capacity: Your kiln holds 400 cubic feet. How many BF of 1"-thick lumber can it hold?
400 ft³ × 12 = 4,800 BF (at nominal 1" thickness)
Shipping volume: You have 500 BF of 2×4 lumber. What is the actual cubic volume?
500 BF ÷ 12 = 41.7 ft³ = 41.7 × 0.02832 = 1.18 m³ (using nominal dimensions)
Metric quote comparison: A Canadian mill quotes Southern Yellow Pine at $220/m³. Your US supplier quotes $560/MBF. Which is cheaper?
$220/m³ × 0.002360 m³/BF = $0.519/BF = $519/MBF. The US quote at $560/MBF is more expensive in this example.
