What Is MBF? Thousand Board Feet Explained

MBF stands for thousand board feet. It is the standard volume unit for wholesale lumber pricing in the United States. The "M" is the Roman numeral for 1,000:

• 1 MBF = 1,000 board feet
• 1 MMBF = 1,000,000 board feet (million board feet — used in large-scale timber reporting)

MBF is used by sawmills, lumber dealers, timber brokers, and commodity markets for pricing and invoicing. Retail lumber at a home-improvement store is typically priced per piece or per linear foot; wholesale and commercial lumber — including sawmill contracts, hardwood dealer price lists, and government timber sales — is priced per MBF.

Calculating Cost from $/MBF Pricing

Example: If Douglas Fir is quoted at $700/MBF and you need 2,500 board feet:

Cost = (2,500 ÷ 1,000) × $700 = 2.5 × $700 = $1,750

MBF vs MSF — What's the Difference?

MBF (thousand board feet) measures lumber volume — it accounts for thickness, width, and length. It's used for solid lumber: boards, timbers, and dimensional lumber.

MSF (thousand square feet) measures lumber area — it's used for panel products like plywood, OSB, and particleboard, which have a fixed nominal thickness and are sold by the sheet or surface area. A sheet of 4×8 plywood = 32 square feet. 1 MSF = 31.25 sheets of 4×8.

Don't confuse MBF (board feet) with MSF (square feet) when comparing quotes — a price in $/MSF for plywood cannot be directly compared to $/MBF for dimensional lumber without knowing the panel thickness.

MMBF — Million Board Feet

MMBF (million board feet) is the next tier up from MBF, used in large-scale contexts where individual MBF figures would be unwieldy:

• Government timber harvest reports: The USDA Forest Service and state forestry agencies report annual timber volumes in MMBF. A national forest might sell 100–500 MMBF per year.
• Mill capacity reporting: Large sawmill operations report production in MMBF annually.
• Lumber market indices: Commodity lumber price indices often quote in MMBF for context on market volume.

The conversion is straightforward: 1 MMBF = 1,000 MBF = 1,000,000 board feet.

When is MBF Used?

• Sawmill pricing: Softwood species like Southern Yellow Pine, Douglas Fir, and Hem-Fir are routinely quoted per MBF in mill-direct and wholesale transactions.
• Hardwood purchasing: Hardwood dealers price figured wood, rough lumber, and kiln-dried stock by the board foot or MBF. Prices can range from $400/MBF for commodity hardwoods to several thousand dollars per MBF for premium species.
• Timber harvest reports: State and federal forestry agencies report timber volumes in MBF (or MMBF for large tracts). Stumpage prices (the value of standing timber) are also quoted in $/MBF.
